Did you know…currently, about one-third of the world does not have access to adequate sanitation including access to toilets. This leads to health and sanitation problems including drinking water contaminated with waste and having to defecate out in the open.
About 50% of primary and secondary schools in Nigeria need to be provided with toilet facilities in order to tackle the poor sanitation and open defecation problem. Poor sanitation puts children at risk of diarrhea and other diseases; around 87,000 children below five die in Nigeria annually from diarrhea. Read more here…
This is why ODU has pledged to address CCC's sanitation issues first, by helping construct sanitary toilet facilities for the students of CCC.
One possible toilet design that is being considered is the Diversion Toilet, which collects waste at the source, separating it for further treatment while recycling used water on site. It is a modern toilet that can function without water or a sewer connection. The Diversion Toilet was developed for the Gates Foundation Reinvent the Toilet Challenge.
